Our Mission

The Achieving Your Potential mission is to assist elementary schools to establish programs with fully packaged and affordable evidenced-based curriculum to address the specific needs of dyslexic children.

The Challenge

Hereditary

10-15% of all children are dyslexic. This is equally distributed across geographies, languages, social economic backgrounds and genders.

Resources not available

18 month backlog due to 40% over-demand of existing training programs. Insufficient trained tutors available to meet needs. Costs are unaffordable for most.

Screening too late

Dyslexic children need to be identified and receive evidenced-based training before 3rd grade to have a meaningful and sustained impact in their lives.

Lack of Assistance

Less than one-third of the children reading below age, ability or grade level receive services. Dyslexic children drop out of school at more than three times the rate of non-dyslexic children.

How does the Achieving Your Potential Foundation carry out its mission?

  • Partner with school districts to implement early identification of dyslexic children and establish self-sustaining, fee-based, after school and summer enrichment programs at their elementary schools.
  • Provide comprehensive evidence-based curriculum, testing and teaching methods as a solution for use in after school enrichment programs within public schools to address the specific and identifiable needs of dyslexic children. These include RAVE-O curriculum developed by Tufts University and and testing services from a Licensed Clinical Psychologist affiliated with Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School.
  • Educate school administrators, teachers, practitioners and parents on the availability and financial planning needed to implement intervention programs for those dyslexic children that need it.
  • Raise and distribute funds to public elementary schools committed to adopting dyslexic specific teaching curriculum within their after school enrichment programs.
  • Measure progress of participating children from start through high school with the goal to raise standardized test scores for these dyslexic children and reduce their barriers to achieving their potential.

Success Stories

  • The RAVE-O curriculum has been a fun and organized way to help students with fluency and decoding.  The focus on MIMS (many interesting meanings) and MICS (many interesting connections), along with other RAVE-O language and tips, made it easier for students to remember key concepts. I see them use the strategies taught in the program to tackle new words and to comprehend the stories that we read.

    – Christine Hodgkins, Teacher

  • I am better at taking my time and sounding out words.

    – Student

  • Thank you for everything.  I am very appreciative of Achieve Your Potential.  My son has been doing better with his reading skills.

    – Parent

  • I am hearing and seeing the differences the Achieve Your Potential program has made for my son. He had become painfully self-conscious about reading out loud, but now he is even reading me magazine excerpts in public – on a wide range of subjects from fast food to the presidential election!

    – Bridget, Parent

  • We have noticed a significant improvement in Patrick’s reading comprehension and in his enthusiasm about words and their different meanings!  Thanks so much!

    – Daisy, Parent

  • I thought it was fun and funny. I learned how to be a better reader. It was also challenging sometimes but I still had fun.

    – Olle, Student

  • My son Olle participated in the RAVE-O program at Tucker during the 2015/16 school year. Olle has had an IEP for reading since 1st grade. I believe this program has tremendously helped Olle’s progress this year. We have seen his reading level improve more this year then in any other year previous. I am so grateful that he is turning a corner. And I am so thankful that we got to participate in Achieve Your Potential.

    – Miriam, Parent

  • Achieving Your Potential helped students who were struggling to read learn to love reading. Through the fun characters and tips they were able to become stronger readers. I was able to watch them become more confident in their reading. The program kept them engaged and interested.

    – Bridget Ruggieri, Teacher

  • Achieving Your Potential’s class called Word Detectives is always a favorite part of my daughter’s day. I have seen definite improvement in her reading, which I credit directly to the program.

    – Parent

  • Fluency in reading is a fundamental building block for success in the classroom and life.  The RAVE-O reading program helped our son to get up-to-speed with his peers at a critical stage of his development.  It has helped to set him on the path for success in school as his confidence and skills in his reading have grown exponentially.  Thank you, RAVE-O!
